How to be a Better Photographer through Image Competition

Lori Unruh Photography Education

Learning the basics of photography is pretty easy to do on one’s own, relatively speaking. There are a gazillion books out there that will teach everything to do with aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. There are more advanced books that focus on posing, lighting, and composition.

But learning what makes truly excellent photography cannot happen in a vacuum. The best way to truly improve your photography is to bare it all, professionally speaking, by entering a photographic competition.

Check out this helpful article on entering and judging a photographic competition, written by one of our member studios.

Think you have what it takes? The best way to get your feet wet with this style of competition would be to join a Professional Photographers of America local affiliate. In the Wilmington area, the nearest affiliate is the Professional Imaging Group of North Carolina, but their meetings are usually up in New Bern. For a less structured review of your images in a casual setting, check out the meetings of the Wilmington chapter of the Wedding and Portrait Society.

If you’d like more information about any of these organizations or about photographic competition, give us a call or send us an email.

Happy Shooting…
